Summary on Grant Application Form |
Recent results have demonstrated the feasibility of producing mechanically pre-stressed insulation by casting in fibres in tension akin to the manufacture of pre-stressed concrete. The resulting compressive stresses in the resin inhibit the growth of electrical trees and hence extend insulation lifetimes. This proposal extends this work by casting in orthogonal fibres in the form of a weft and a warp and the residual stress in the fibres will be extensively investigated by the use of Raman spectroscopy. The use of cast-in optical sensors is intended to permit the investigation of fibre tension, by Raman spectroscopy, in filled, and therefore opaque, insulation systems.
