Summary on Grant Application Form
The main objectives of this proposal are to further research in areas where the use of land surveying using GPS (Global Positioning Systems) are an integral and vital component of the study and to support areas of research that rely on precise land survey information for basic data. A secondary aspect is to provide state-of-the-art GPS equipment that can be used for undergraduate teaching on specific surveying modules within the Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering and the School of Earth Sciences. The five main projects that this application seeks to support are as follows: -* (a) Effects of recirculating landfill leachate at Howden Clough Landfill Site* (b) Influence of geological structures and old mine workings on the group vibration response due to quarry blasting* (c) Generation and Dispersal of Airborne Micro Organisms from Solid Waste Composting Plants* (d) Integration of accurate survey data within a Knowledge-based Geographical Information System for environmental impact assessment of surface mining and quarrying operations* (e) Risk assessment associated with mineral extraction and waste disposalIn addition to the identified research projects, this equipment will act as a catalyst in the growing collaboration among the three departments. The synergy to be gained by this type of collaboration will lead to further interdisciplinary projects.
