Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to install CCD cameras on two existing 400 kilovolt high resolution electron microscopes to allow us to significantly enhance their capabilities. On one instrument the main aim is to enable us to acquire fully quantitative data rapidly and efficiently. We will also be able to obtain good-quality enhanced image storage and archiving capability. We will also be able to obtain good-quality images from beam sensitive specimens. On the second microscope its unique in-situ capability (developed at Oxford) will be fully exploited by our ability to record high quality images in real-time, of in situ solid state reactions. This instrument may also be configured to examine magnetic materials under controllable magnetisation conditions. Again, the ability to record digital images both rapidly and quantitatively will be a significant benefit. There will also be a further benefit for both instruments, in that digital images do not require expensive, and time-consuming, photographic processing. Digital images can be processed on-line, analysed and exported directly into documents and manuscripts, or over the internet. Image archiving is also efficient and cheap: over 100 images can be stored on a single recordable CD.This development will be used in support of a number of existing and planned projects, involving the Departments of Materials, Engineering and Chemistry at Oxford University.
