Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal seeks to exploit an infrastructural investment in a computing facility which will underpin a substantial proportion of all our current and future simulation work. In this project this will occur in three ways. Firstly, a substantial increase in the scale and accuracy of simulations for all our existing industrial and government supported work will be immediately achieved. Specifically, advanced WDM multiplexes will be simulated and designed for immediate industrial exploitation, enhanced simulations of highly topical printed mobile communication antennas performed, accurate dosimetry calculations performed for assessing the biological impact of electromagnetic fields, and detailed development of multiconductor models embedded into field codes for complex EMC simulations performed. Secondly, strategically important development work will be performed to demonstrate and assess the performance of advanced models which accurately describe the coupling between electromagnetic fields and other physical processes, with particular application to high power lasers. Thirdly, the feasibility of combining Genetic search algorithms with highly efficient electromagnetic codes for the optimisation of integrated optoelectronic circuits will be demonstrated. This work features close collaboration between two groups at Nottingham, the University of Sheffield, Bookham Technology and COMPAQ computers.
