Summary on Grant Application Form |
We request partial support for state-of-the-art powder X-ray diffraction instrumentation for sample characterisation particularly in a controlled environment, at low diffraction angles and from fluorescent samples. Systems that will be studied include phase behaviour/polymorphism of organics, nanostructured materials, application based inorganics such as sulphides, complex oxides, nitride, fluorides and zeolites. Specifically we require a versatile, multi-capability diffractometer to cover the needs of several departmental groups and two major industrial sponsors, who are supporting this bid and need occasional access to the instrumentation. The system will supplement our outdated and currently vastly overloaded equipment. Additional facets of the bid are the testing of a new detector for Bruker AXS, which will have exceptional characteristics to deal with fluorescent samples - a major problem with a number of the projects, and significant University wide support for the equipment. Major projects that the apparatus will promote include studies of polymorphism and phase transitions in organic and inorganic compounds, particularly pharmaceutical materials, including environment (time/temp/humidity) induced changes and in situ reactivity and phase formation of complex sulphides/oxides/nitrides.
