Summary on Grant Application Form |
The applicant collaborated with Professor Khonsari in 1999 and this has resulted in the accepted publication (Part 1, ref[12]), and also to be presented at the next ASME/STLE International Joint Tribology Conference in October 2000. This work addressed the problem of identifying the correct film entry temperature for a fully circumferentially grooved bearing. Another problem with such bearings, particularly at low loads or high speeds, is that they are predicted as being dynamically unstable according to existing design guidelines. However, experimental work of Maki and Ezzat (ASME,1982) from General Motors indicates dynamic stability under similar range operating conditions. To date no explanation of this long standing discrepancy between theoretical and experimental behaviour has been offered. The applicant and Professor Khonsari have exchanged several communications on this and believe that they have identified the correct dynamic groove-lubricant interaction to explain the experimental results. It is proposed use the visit to work intensively and offer a rigorous solution of the dynamic problem. The proposed research will take place in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at LSU and in association with the Centre for Rotating Machinery. This will provide an ideal opportunity to identify future research activity in the tribologhy/bearings area.
