Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks funding for a high throughput GS-MS instrument to provide hands-on access for researchers working in catalysis and co-ordination chemistry. The proposed catalytic projects range from continuous organic reactions in supercritical fluids and microscale mechanistic studies at cryogenic temperatures to inhibition of enzymes and homogeneous catalysis. Other applications include polymerisation in supercritical fluids and ligand design for organometallic and bioinorganic chemistry. The projects involve staff from across the School of Chemistry, including inorganic, organic, biological and materials chemists. We have chosen an ion trap instrument which will provide an MS-MS capability which will enhance our ability to identify unknown reaction products. The flexibility of the instrument will be increased by having both electron I act and chemical ionisation. Productivity will be maximised by use of an autosampler. No machine of this type is currently available in the School of Chemistry. Our proposal is supported by 50% funding; 27% from unfettered University funds and 23% from Thomas Swan & Co Ltd, an innovative SME fine chemicals manufacturer, who have collaborated with the Principal Applicant for the past 5 years on continuous reactions in supercritical fluids. Currently they are building a 1000 ton pa plant to commercialise this research.
