Summary on Grant Application Form |
There is a need to ultrasonically test real components with unprepared rough surfaces either during manufacture or in service. Laser based ultrasound (LBU) can be used on moving objects and at elevated temperatures and potential applications are in the metals forming industry and for advanced materials such as aerospace fibre reinforced composites where the liquid couplants essential for conventional ultrasonic inspection are an unacceptable contaminant.Warwick is already carrying out work in both these areas, sub does not have the capability to detect ultrasound on unprepared moving surfaces. In industrial applications it is normally necessary to inspect the component from one side only, the photo-emf interferometer is capable to detecting LBU at the laser generation spot. The photo-emf detector would enable us to exploit considerable background knowledge in damage free laser generation of ultrasound in metals and composites and develop LBU techniques which are applicable on the shop floor.British Aerospace (Sowerby) will support the research by provision of aerospace samples and access to test facilities Corus Steel (Teeside Technology Centre) will provide steel plate samples with defects and access to pilot plant.
