Summary on Grant Application Form
The main goal proposal deals with the development of robust tools and methods for investigation and assessment of the stability of historic masonry structures. Within this framework the intention is focused on masonry arches and domes. The model for the material is assumed to be a discrete system of rigid blocks that transmit no tension across the joints but with frictional constraints. Such a model can properly represent those masonry structures made of dry stone blocks assembled together or with joints filled by poor mortar.During the proposed visit the research activities will be regarding the revision and the possible extension of computation methods for the stability analysis of these masonry structures subject to uneven settlements. In particular some linear programming problems already partially implemented will be refined as regard to limit analysis of masonry arches with non-associated flow rules. At present research is in progress on the stability of the scissors arches of Wells Cathedral. These will be used to perform an application of the revised numerical procedure.
