The class of Cyclodextrin-threaded Polyconjugated Rotaxanes, CD-PCRs, offers an exciting opportunity for studying and controlling solid state and interchain interactions of organic semiconductors with a view to a new generation of Light-Emitting Polymers, LEPs. We can access CD-PCRs via collaboration with HL Anderson, who has invented a general synthetic route. The main advantages that we expect over un-insulated materials are substantial increase of luminescence efficiency and chemical stability. Our project focuses first on the basic photophysics (PL efficiency, excited state absorption for investigating Inter-Systems Crossing of radiative excitons to the triplets manifold and occurrence/lack of charge generation via exciton splitting). This will allow us to establish nature and extent of solid state interactions, by comparison with unthreaded materials.Then we will use CD-PCRs as active layers of LEDs (or in some case LECs,) either as neat films or in blends with relative high charge mobility hosts. These blends aim at achieving low foeld charge transport in the host and efficient luminescence froMm CD-PCRs dopants. We will use state-of-the-art LiF/Al cathodes, and ITO anodes optimised for hole injection via oxygen-plasma treatment prior to coating with hole-injection/electron-blocking layers, e.g.phthalocyanines, PVK, or molecularly engineered PEDOT:PSS spin-coated or self assembled multi-layers.
