Summary on Grant Application Form |
The central theme of the proposed research programme is the exploitation of an amplified Ti-sapphire laser together with non-linear frequency conversion and diagnostic/analytical schemes. The uniquely versatile ultrashort-pulse optical source will open up major new themes in multi-disciplinary projects which will have the active involvement of biologists, clinicians, chemists and physicists. The applications described include advances in femtobiology, quantum control in ultracold molecules, self-assembled monolayers, semiconducting polymers and pioneering aspects of nonlinear optics in quantum-designed semiconductor structures. This equipment initiative is expected to lead to a range of new existing research opportunities where the work is planned to be internationally leading in all disciplines. It is also expected that this research will lead to commercialisation routes in the sectors of the more applied science.
