1. To investigate inductive logic programming and neural network implementation on parallel hardware to facilities the study of protein structures, enzyme and similar organic systems.2. Acoustic isolation and the avoidance of echoes are prerequisites for many fundamental acoustic measurements. The anechoic chamber and supporting facilities being requested will allow us to make such measurement in-house, taking forward our existing research on the analysis, coding, synthesis and three-dimensional diffusion of audio signals.3. The UHV AFM, STM and XPES will provide spetroscopic and atomic-resolution microscopic facilities to facilitate fundamental and applied research on the chemical, electronic, and structural properties of a wide range of important materials. Specifically: to understand and control the effect of surface chemical structure on real catalyst structures including membranes and planar reactor surfaces; to characterise catalyst phases in novel micro-reactors, complex heterogeneous catalysts, including oxide surfaces and poisoned catalysts; excited states of adsorbed molecules; to develop and understand metal-semiconductor surfaces and interfaces; magnetic clusters; and giant magneto-resistance thin films.4. The initial research associated with this infrastructure will set out to establish an architectural framework in which heterogeneous and mobile interactive devices can be configured and understood; provide a means of establishing interface across varying modalities and media to applicants that are perceived by users as consistent and compatible; provide standard means of calibrating the emission characteristics of typical domestic configurations.
