|
This proposal aims to study the complex and inter-disciplinary issues concerning the design, construction and operation of high performance ships, which are able to take advantage of the advances in materials and production technologies while incorporating the latest techniques in design engineering leading to safe and reliable artefacts. The philosophy adopted in this proposal is about bringing people to work together on new strands of research. Until now three members of the team have been studying the dynamics of structure made from predominantly isotropic materials (e.g. WGP, PT, JTX). The other two (RSA, JMB) have been concerned primarily with understanding the behaviour of layered composite materials and structures in the quasi-static domain. What is being proposed is the creation of a new stream to study the structural dynamics of structural systems with multi-phase materials, with potential applications to the next generation of high performance ships. Four inter-related projects are being proposed. These relate to (a) Structural dynamics of deformable structures with hybrid material combinations; (b) power flow analysis of metal-composite structural systems; (c) Ultimate collapse strength of composite structures; (d) Experimental stress analysis of orthotropic structures.
