Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is proposed to investigate that the spreading of liquid drops over porous hydrophobic substrates from both experimental and theoretical points of view. The spreading of small drops (capillary driven spreading) and larger drops (gravity driven spreading) will be investigated. Ultra- and /or microfiltration membranes will be used as model porous substrates. An attempt will be made to connect membrane rejection ability/permeability with membrane wettability. In the case of spreading over hydrophobic substrates the proposed research aims to address the following basic problems from both theoretical and experimental points of view: mechanisms of surfacant molecules transfer onto the dry portion of hydrophobic substrate, the influence of surface diffusion of surfactant molecules in front of the spreading drop, influence of strategy energy of hydrophobic substrates and the nature of surfacant.Experimental investigations (Professor v Sobolev) will be accompanied by parallel theoretical modelling (professor v Starov) and on-line comparison of the theoretical predictions and experimental data. It is assumed that these combined efforts will result in a prediction of Kinetics of the spreading of pure liquids and aqueous surfacant solutions over hydrophobic and pours surfaces
