Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research is to establish electrophoretic NMR, backed by PFG NMR and other experimental methods to investigate polymer gel electrolytes and their liquid counterparts. The electrophoretic experiments will measure the mobilities of ionic species in liquid electrolytes and polymer gel electrolyes incorporating lithium salts with fluorinated anions using NMR pulsed field gradient echo measurements of 7Li and 19F motion in the presence of strong electric fields. By distinguishing the motion of charged ions and higher charged aggregates from that of neutral ion pairs and clusters, issues relating to ion association and mobility and the concentration dependence of the ionic conductivity can be resolved. The NMR methods combined with structural determinations including MNR T2 measurements to identify the proportions of the various mobile and immobilised phases. Different compositions and processing methods will be used to change the structure of the gels to determine how the microstructure of the gel effects the polymer-solvent-salt interaction and ionic conduction mechanisms.
