|
Myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE) is a new method for assessing health of heart tissue which combines injection of a contrast agent with an ultrasound imaging protocol. The method highlights regions of the left ventricular myocardium (heart wall) which have poor blood flow which can be indicative of coronary artery diseases and acute myocardial infarction. To-date, most research has focused on the development of so-called secondary generation contrast agents (such as Optison and Sonozaid), ultrasound contrast imaging protocols (such as pulse-inversion imaging and release burst imaging). The clinical utility of MCE is currently being investigated in a number of clinical research institutions of which the laboratory headed by professor Sanjiv Kaul at the University of Virginia (UVA), in Charlottesville USA is one of the most well known.However, most work to date has focused on detection of sick tissue rather than qualification of the size and severity of disease tissue. The purpose of the proposed two-month visit to UVA is to learn about the state-of-the-art application of MCE in clinical research and to define the basis for an MCE quantification project that will be continued on my return to Oxford. Short visits to two other East Coast laboratories working on cardiac imaging are also proposed.
