Summary on Grant Application Form |
The UK faces considerable challenges to meet the targets for waste reduction set by the Government and EU policies for waste management. The Network for Research into Sustainable Waste Management (NetSWaM) will provide a forum for interaction between UK academics and waste management practitioners aimed at promoting the research which will enable these targets to be met. The network will encourage collaboration between a multidisciplinary team of researchers from initially seven universities together with EA, ESART, IWM, ENTRUST and industry partners by setting up a managed web-based network. NetSWaM will facilitate meetings of special interest groups which will focus on the main research areas of: waste composition, recovery and reuse waste, biological treatment, sustainable landfill, landfill remediation, best practice and consumer behavioural studies. Information from the individual interest groups will be available to the whole Network and research results will be disseminated to their wider academic and industrial communities by a web-site and through academic trade journals. A database covering all the research undertaken by the network members and will be developed and made available via the web-site. The Network will also host two workshops and a national conference during the first three years of operation; these events will be open to both members and non-members. The network aims to bring in additional universities, industrial partners and others interested in waste management as it develops.
