Membrane Bioreactors (MBR) will be used to provide intensified systems for the production of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and to perform biotransformations as catalysed by LAB. Three companies will collaborate (HP Bulmer and Interprise who utilise LAB, while PCI Memtech is a membrane system fabricator) with the Centre for Complex Fluids Processing, University of Wales Swansea to investigate these systems for enhanced productivity, process innovation, process flexibility and the development of new products.The MBRs will be studied and optimised for cell production and biotransformation by investigating: 1. Membrane reactor materials selection; 2. Manipulation of the control systems to manage both the cell activity (biocatalytic powder an vitality) and membrane performance; 3. Modelling the Process for Process predication, Process Strategy and Selection.The outcomes of the project will give examples of MBR applied to viable industrial processes that will increase the productivity of the processes and allow product innovation. It will also provide fundamental knowledge for the improved design and operation of product or substrate inhibited high cell density MBR. The project will provide a springboard to apply the technology to a wide range of applications requiring enhanced cell production and biotransformations.
