Summary on Grant Application Form |
Oxide glasses from a material class having a very broad range of everyday as well as highly specialised applications such as heat-resistant tiles or optical fibres. This is based on the fact that their macroscopic properties (like viscosity, refractive index, heat expansion) can be adjusted by changing their composition and their microstructure. The proposed programme aims at describing the microstructure from the atomic level up to the level of nanosized precipitates within the glass matrix. It will employ a range of NMR methods, including high-resolution and two-dimensional techniques, as well as small-angle scattering. An aspect of particular importance is the evolution of microstructural features during the glass/melt transition and during recrystallisation. For this purpose, an ultra-high temperature NMR facility will be built up for measurements up to 2500K, which will be unique in the UK and is presently only available at the CNRS high-temperature centre at Orleans. The programme will make use of other facilities available within the UWA Materials Laboratory as well as the department's links to the Central Facilities and ongoing collaborations with the NMR group at Orleans, with Pilkington glass company, and with the spectrometer manufacturer, Bruker.
