Summary on Grant Application Form |
Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD) is characterised by a level of complexity in length and time scales that makes straightforward numerical modelling nearly impossible. To make any further progress, recent advances in numerical analysis, dynamical theory, fundamental GFD, and wave-mean interaction theory should be combined. UK researchers and members of the Network have been in the forefront of making many contributions in related problem areas. The members of the proposed Network are particularly involved in geometric integration methods, geometric methods for conservative PDEs, fundamental GFD, and wave-mean interaction. The network is being formed to provide an efficient way of promoting exchange of these ideas and fostering innovative research. Specifically, the Network will (a) work on conservative numerical methods for iGFD; (b) provide a central web-page with pooled information, news and software; (c) organise one major meeting on computational GFD in 2003; (d) incubate a range of further projects, to prepare them for full-fledged research proposals.
