In a dense plasma, collisions between electrons and ions mean that if one of these components is heated the other component will come to be at the same temperature after a time determined by the rate of collisions and effectiveness in transferring kinetic energy. For classical plasma this time can be very short. However, the effect of degeneracy and strong coupling are predicted to extend this time to tens or hundreds of picseconds for a dense plasma at modest temperatures. This experimental programme is designed to make observations in this phenomenon by using x-ray scattering from the plasma. For a strongly correlated plasma created, it is expected that the X-ray scattering cross section will display a distinct peak at an angle by the density. The width of the peak will depend directly on the ion temperature. By monitoring the evolution of this peak for a dense plasma primarily heated by X-rays (electron heating) we will extract information about the time scale for electron-ion equilibration.
