Summary on Grant Application Form
A major obstacle to the effective exploitation of HPC is the scarcity of user friendly tools and techniques to support the users of such systems. This difficulty is even more pronounced for users of Grid-computing resources where the obstacles to achieving effective performance are even more challenging. In the research programme outlined below we intend to develop tools and techniques to support users of SGI 5200 systems; this will include:* Overhead analysis based approaches to parallel performance enhancement;* Compiler-based approaches to parallel applications development;* Investigation of object-orientated abstractions for HPC applications;* Implementation of the Arena customisable operating system. We intend to use advances in all of the above areas to support the development of HPC applications on a local Grid-computing system that will include the SGI 5200 as one of its principle components.
