Summary on Grant Application Form
This application is for a contribution to the cost of equipment that would used to improve heat transfer research already underway at the University of Oxford. The equipment would also enable important research for industrial gas turbines to be undertaken. The request is for instrumentation and a power supply to be fitted to an existing wind tunnel that would be used to make heat transfer measurements. The equipment would enhance the wind tunnel by the application of state of the art video instrumentation and novel flow temperature modulating heaters. The enhanced wind tunnel would be used to make detailed heat transfer measurements at high processing speed. The immediate duty is the assessment of heat transfer promoting systems used in turbine blade cooling systems. In the longer term, it is planned that the equipment would be used to research the performance of high temperature heat exchangers suitable for use in advanced industrial gas turbines used for electrical power generation. The equipment would enable heat transfer results to be produced rapidly from a wind tunnel capable of operating with large-scale models at Reynolds numbers representative of those found in heat exchangers used in industrial gas turbines.
