Summary on Grant Application Form
A magnetic characterisation facility will be established at the University of Bristol, based on a SQUID magnetometer. The instrument will be sponsored by the manufacturers' agents and by NanoMagnetics Ltd, a company developing applications for single-domain magnetic particles prepared chemically using protein molecules as templates. Magnetic interactions within ordered arrays of particles with diameters of 8nm or less, prepared by NanoMagnetics, will be studied by means of susceptibility and remanence measurements as a function of the particle's anisotropy. The interactions will be modified by mixing magnetic and non-magnetic particles in the same array. The magnetic properties of CuxNi1-x alloys and CuxNi1-x/CuyNi1-y multilayers and multilayers nanowires prepared by a novel electrodeposition technique will also be studied, with particular emphasis on the effects of Ni clustering. Magnetic measurements will be used to probe the superconducting state in electrodeposited mesostructures and in strongly correlated electron systems. Interactions across the bridging ligands in molecular magnets will be studied.
