The Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Dundee enjoys an informal collaboration in many aspects of medical and surgical research with institutions in Brazil. The aim of this project is to formalise the collaboration and to focus on a number of the problems and challenges encountered by doctors and surgeons in their diagnosis and treatment of patients under the auspices of MERIT (Medical Engineering Research Institute), based in Dundee. These will be linked by the common theme Application of Emerging Technology to Medical and Surgical Problems .These institutions have many areas of special interest in heart surgery which compliment the work being undertaken at Dundee. The expected outcome of this project will be the identification of a number of specific problems, which will then form the basis for international cross discipline collaborative research projects between the University of Dundee and institutions in Brazil. These projects will include teams of doctors and surgeons working with technologies and academics to maximise and optimise research and development efficiency and the benefits of the take-up of modern technology by the medical community. Doctors and surgeons are extremely busy people and cannot reasonably be expected to maintain a completely up-to-date understanding of the ever-moving boundaries of technology. This type of collaboration will not only provide them with this understanding, but it will also allow the technologists to better understand the problems faced by the surgical team.
