Summary on Grant Application Form |
Previous work has shown that artificially lowering the water table in a beach can provide an effective means of stabilisation. However, results from full scale trials have been varied and it is apparent that further research is necessary before design guidelines can be produced. The project aims to advanced our understanding of this subject by facilitating collaboration between the small number of laboratories where research experience in the field currently resides. In particular we aim to consolidate a link between the University of Southampton and the shoreline Environmental Research Facility of Texas A(M University, where some preliminary collaborative experiments will be carried out. Other facilities suitable for future large scale experimental investigations will also be identified. An international workshop will be held in Southampton in the summer of 2001 to establish the current state-of-the-art, and to map out the next steps. Finally, a proposal for further collaborative large scale research will be prepared.
