Summary on Grant Application Form |
2xxx (Al-Cu-Mg) Al based alloys are precipitation strengthened alloys. Due to current and anticipated changes in manufacturing techniques, materials producers and manufacturers need a model which predicts strength levels as a function of composition, processing and heat treatment. We propose to derive such a model using a novel integrated modelling approach based on microstructure development and to assess the model using an extensive and detailed analysis of the microstructures of a range of 2xxx alloys. The programme will address key scientific issues such as superposition of strengthening by precipitates of a range of shapes and orientation relationships, and superposition of solution, grain boundary and precipitate strengthening, as well as provide new methods for integrating microstructural development models and microstructure-property models. Dissemination and industrial application of the results will be achieved through journal publications and existing formal collaborations with the Luxfer Group, DERA and the DARP in Advanced Metallic Airframes (DARP-AMA), thus covering UK producers of aluminium extrusions and plate and UK users of these products.Of a total programme cost of 103k, 60k (-58%) is sought from EPSRC, the remaining direct and indirect costs relating to this programme are provided by the School for Engineering Sciences and industrial collaborators.
