Summary on Grant Application Form |
The uptake of shared design tools enabling on-line collaborative design work over distances has in practice been disappointing, and whilst there are a range of possible reasons (managerial, technology-related, psychological) for this, the present proposal seeks to examine a subset of psychological (and Specifically, communicational) issues. The research will seek to establish the constraints placed upon communication and joint problem-solving by such systems, by comparing face-to-face with computer- (and specifically, video-) mediated collaborative design work undertaken by novice and expert designers. We will build upon and complement previous research which has examined the effect of video-mediation upon structural features of conversation, and specifically a) the process of establishing mutual knowledge and understanding and b) the process of joint problem-solving in the shared design task itself. The research will clarify the effect of video mediation on communication content, thereby supplementing previous research in this field, will clarify some of the difficulties inherent in introducing network based shared workspace systems, and have implications for the training of users of such systems.
