Summary on Grant Application Form |
The primary aims of this research are:To investigate methods for converting (voxelising) objects from various source data types into distance fields. To investigate the potential benefits of distance fields to other application areas. The first strand will involve investigating and implementing procedures to enable the conversion of all forms of object data types (e.g. polygonal meshes, swept or extruded surfaces and objects, CSG, implicit, CT or MRI scans, parametric patches) into distance fields. Work will concentrate on using standard PC hardware and other techniques we are currently researching to accelerate conversion. We will also look at how colour could be represented and used within distance fields. The second strand will specifically look at the areas of forensic science, surgical simulation, manufacturing and computer graphics rendering, to determine the benefit distance fields could have on those areas. It is expected that some progress will be made on several or all of the areas which could suggest that further collaborative research would produce useful results within those areas.
