Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will enhance a portfolio of current research projects at ICSTM and the National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur. It aims to satisfy a clear engineering need by providing constitutive laws for life prediction and design. It does so through knowledge of the micromechanisms controlling the long-term creep behaviour in conditions relevant to service. The proposed work will lead to significant advances in the fundamental understanding of creep deformation of engineering alloys and will tailor the constitutive laws to the differing modes of damage and microstructural evolution in different categories of materials, including high temperature steels and single crystal superalloys. Extension of the models to account for multiaxial stress states and to variable loads will be considered, and will be validated experimentally. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with a number of engineering companies with the aim of facilitating its implementation in engineering practice.
