Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project has two aims: (1) the elucidation of the mechanism of action of cyclodextrins in emulsion polymerisation's and (2) the synthesis and application of cyclic oligostyrene sulphonates. The mechanistic study will mainly involve the use of radical trapping strategies designed to probe the hypothesis that the role of cyclodextrines is to increase the aqueous phase concentration of monomer rather than to ferry monomer through the aqueous phase to the locus of polymerisation. The synthesis of cyclic oligostyrene sulphonates is designed to pump prime the use of alternative cyclic amphiphilic oligomers as aids in the emulsion polymerisation of very water insoluble monomers.
