Summary on Grant Application Form |
Using the high precision electromagnetic probe we will investigate the subatomic structure of matter with increasing resolution. At lower incident electron or photon energies of around 100 MeV global properties of light nuclei will be studied. At electron energy around 1 GeV the short-range structure of the nucleus becomes accessible. At still high electron energies of up to 6 GeB we will be able to single out study the constituents of the nucleus, ie nucleons, nucleon resonances and mesons, both inside the nucleus and as free particles. Our experimental results will test a variety of theoretical models of hadrons or nuclei of quite different nature depending on the degrees of freedom assumed for these systems; quark-gluon, nucleon-meson or quark-meson.To carry out above experiments, a number of instrumental developments are necessary. This includes, for instances, an upgrade of the Glasgow photon tagger at the Mainz MAMI electron accelerator in Germany. Other Glasgow projects are the installation of a new linearly polarised photon source at one of the three experimental facilities at Jefferson lab in the USA and the development of novel detectors and fast readout electronics for applications in Nuclear, Medical and Environmental Physics.
