This proposal addresses a perceived need to develop a systemic understanding of business dynamics. It describes how a network of researchers, companies, and relevant EPSRC-funded networks will be drawn together, and their combined expertise and experience made to focus on the dynamics of product innovation in supply (and demand) chains. From a systems perspective, this web of chains is more aptly regarded as a single, coherent Extended Enterprise (EE). Hence, we refer to the theoretical principles for understanding the structure and dynamics for these business webs as Enterprise Systemics. A business-orientated network is envisaged which will draw together and provide a sufficiently broad understanding of business need. There is also a need however for strong connections to other networks in the physical and social sciences, and with techniques-based networks, as in complexity theory (Kell 99). The proposal team bring something timely, promising and relevant to the table: the deliverables from an EPSRC-funded project: PIPSEE (GR/L88603). This knowledge and technology, coupled with the knowledge base of systems expertise, both in the UK and the USA, and the case studies and experience of the network's industrial collaborators will form a uniquely powerful concentration of theory and practice in product innovation.
