Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme will undertake detailed Finite element Analyses of a selection of typical joints in aircraft structure. The basic response of these joints will be assessed for standard loading e.g. the rotation of skin and stringer at the edge of a panel. This basic data will then be used to obtain an equivalent stiffness which could be inserted into coarse design models. For example the interface between a stringer and the skin panel could be represented as a series of springs which will respond as the detailed riveted flange would. The initial work will therefore require a study of standard aircraft joints to select the cases for study. Once the FE study has been completed the representative models will be used in a simple design study of a fuselage section to illustrate the effect of changing the stiffness of joints on the global behaviour of the model.
