Summary on Grant Application Form
The fundamental chemical reactivity of CI atoms with a variety of organic molecules will be explored using an existing time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF MS) and associated lasers. We have recently developed techniques for measurement of properties of the nascent HCI products including rotational quantum state population distributions and angular scattering information. Our purpose-designed instrument enables us to study reactions initiated by 355-nm photolysis of CI2 in proximity to an expansion of an organic molecule under high vacuum conditions, and to probe the newly formed HCI products by resonance enhanced multi-photon ionization. Recent experiments on the reaction of CI with methanol proved the capabilities of the instrument, and funding is now sought to provide a PDRA to explore further H-atom abstraction reactions from molecules containing a variety of functional groups including (for example) CH3CHO, CH3SH, CH3C(O)CH3 and CH3OCH3. Results will shed light on the shapes of transition states for the reactions and will be interpreted with the aid of ab initio calculations of transition state geometries.
