|
Pregnant women in cars currently adapt, modify, and improvise their environment to increase efficiency, safety and comfort. Whilst the problems associated with pregnancy have been recognised in part by legal procedure and precedent, they remain largely ignored by automotive manufacturers, through both scarcity of focused research and potential economic considerations. The proposed research seeks to improve the quality of life for pregnant women by providing a tool for designers in order to guide them to consider features of pregnant women, and how these can be allowed for at the design stage of the vehicle and its components. The research will involve identification of the needs and characteristics of pregnant women, generation of a WWW-based information resource of these characteristics, and derivation of design guidelines for the automotive industry. These will be evaluated through a case study with collaborating manufacturers.
