Summary on Grant Application Form
Many issues governing charge carrier injection into organic semiconductors in devices such as conjugated polymer light-emitting diodes or molecular electronic devices are still poorly understood. Here we propose to apply ballistic-electron-emission microscopy (BEEM) to study charge injection into organic semiconducting molecules with nanometer spatial resolution. BEEM is an experimentally challenging, but very powerful scanning probe spectroscopy technique, that has not been applied to organic semiconductors yet. It will allow local measurements of Schottky barrier heights with nanometer spatial resolution at technologically important metal-organic semiconductor interfaces and will enable us to study effects of local chemical interactions and polaron formation on carrier injection.
