Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall aim of the proposed research is to lay the theoretical and practical foundations for an enduring 'rolling programme' of industrial futures research and dissemination forming part of an international network of similar activity and providing a continuing service to industrialists and policy makers. It will take forward and develop the work of the Foresight 2020 Panel providing continuity, expertise, interpretation and insights which cannot be achieved within the current Foresight programme.Businesses are influenced by factors at three levels: environmental, sectoral and company-specific. Environmental factors include national and global economic trends, developments in universal technologies such as IT, and national and international social factors. Sectoral factors include market trends affecting the sector, sector-specific technologies and skills, training and development. Company-specific factors include markets, competitors and emerging practices. While companies are clearly affected by factors at all three levels, access to data at each level and schemes of interpretation vary widely.New frameworks and mechanisms are required for the sharing of information, perceptions and expertise, in the context of robust assessments of trends in key factors influencing industrial futures. Such frameworks will draw upon research already being undertaken within the Institute for Manufacturing in the areas of strategy, performance measurement, technology management, knowledge management and international manufacturing but also develop new knowledge about futures studies.
