Summary on Grant Application Form |
The broad aim of this proposal is the development of new generic electrochemical devices for the extraction of heavy metals from single and two phase solvent environments. The new technology will be based on insonated electrodes in flow and batch configurations. Extraction efficiencies will be optimised in terms of the electrode area, transducer/electrode configuration, cell geometry and solution throughout.Experimental studies will focus on the efficient extraction of metals such as Cr, Cu, Cd and Pb from water and oil/water mixtures. Supporting kinetic and mechanistic analysis will also be performed using recently established hydrodynamic approaches.Numerical simulations evaluating the influence of acoustic streaming and mass transport on the extraction efficiency will also be developed as part of the programme. These codes will employ the finite element method and will permit fundamental aspects such as the influence of acoustic streaming and mass transport on the electrolysis current, as well as assisting in the optimisation of the reactor designs.
