Summary on Grant Application Form
The excitonic eigenstates of random 2D potentials will be studied experimentally by means of optical emission and excitation spectroscopy. In order to achieve the required sensitivity, spatial and spectral resolution a new instrument will be developed which combines the technique of solid immersion lens microscopy, and echelle grating spectroscopy. The key scientific target will be the measurement of exciton optical emission and absorption at very high spectral and spatial resolution. Such measurements have never been made; several fascinating aspects of exciton states in the presence of disorder should be measurable for the first time, including quantum level repulsion, and spectral diffusion associated with random charging events at single carrier traps.
