Summary on Grant Application Form
3-Helium MR imaging is a new technique, which makes it possible to image the airways dynamically and with great detail. Furthermore, this tool is capable of performing lung physiology measurements, based on signal decay (oxygen dependent). However, the technique is new and standardisation is still an issue. The University of Sheffield has built initial links with the University of Mainz (as part of two Framework 5 grants). During discussions, it was determined that the building of a sensor for direct monitoring of polarisation during the inhalation of the gas would improve the robustness of the test. This is outside the remit of the Framework 5 grants. Initial links were made with National Physics Laboratories, who have extensive experience in the standardisation industry, who have agreed to become a subcontractor to the University of Sheffield. In this context, we want to extend the international collaboration between these 3 organisations, in order to prepare for the development of this new sensor. In particular, we need to address the requirements for such a device, draw up development plans and break down the amount and type of work and corresponding funding required by these three partners.
