In the colloidal processing of ceramic powders it is vital to accurately control the interparticle forces. This is usually done with polyelectrolyte dispersants. Many variables such as ionic strength, pH, dispersant molecular weight, particle size, temperature and solvency all effect how the polyelectrolyte adsorbs and thus how it imparts stability to the particles. Thus the first part of the proposal is a fundamental investigation of interparticle forces in concentrated aqueous suspensions. The second part involves applying this knowledge to an investigation of fine mineral ores, in particular determining the optimum amount of polyelectrolyte for grinding and flotation. Work will also be carried out to study how microwaves effect the surface chemistry of different mineral ores and how this aids grinding and flotation.
