Summary on Grant Application Form
The research is collaborative with Huddersfield University where a novel theoretical worm gear wear model will be developed. This is the primary purpose of the research project. The contribution made at Cardiff University to the overall success of the project will be elastohydrodynamic lubrication modelling of worm gear contacts over their meshing cycle at different stages in the wear process. This will provide key information on lubricant film thickness, degree of boundary lubrication, surface traction and component surface temperature distribution for incorporation into the worm gear wear model that will be developed. The research will also involve input to the development of the wear model for this particular application to worm gears as comparisons of theoretically predicted wear with experimentally measured wear patterns are produced at Huddersfield.Consideration will also be given to the effects of pits that typically characterise the wear process in bronze worm wheel components. Pit lubricant pressures will be established and their influence on the load bearing contact area and stress concentration effects will be quantified. This information will be available to give possible refinement of the wear model.
