Summary on Grant Application Form
The enantioselective hydrogenation of beta-keto esters over R,R-tartaric acid modified Ni catalysts is a relatively rare example of a heterogeneously catalysed chiral process due to the competing racemic reaction which occurs over bare Ni sites. This proposed research starts from the premise that diluting the Ni surface with relatively inert Auatoms will quench the racemic hydrogenation reaction. In addition, the phenomenon of adsorbate induced segregation coupled with the tendency of modifiers to cluster due to favourable H-bonding interactions should result in the formation of active and enantioselective chirally modified Ni rich regions on the surface separated by inactive Au rich alloy surfaces. These hypotheses will be investigated by STM, RAIRS and MEIS studies on chirally Modified Au(111)/Ni surfaces. The well characterised models will be tested an enantioselective catalysts in a liquid cell attached to a UHV preparation chamber. The conclusions derived from these investigations will be carried through to real catalysis by the synthesis, characterisation and testing of well defined Au-core/Ni-shell colloidal catalysts stabilised by chiral ligands.
