Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose a collaborative programme that aims to explore the possibility of creating a new form of Photonic integrated Circuit based on photonic bandgap materials. The programme is specifically targeted at future high- bandwidth optical fibre telecommunications systems. Research will focus on the fabrication of high aspect-ratio photonic crystal structures in W based epitaxial material. The theory required to guide such photonic crystal based microstructure design will be developed and appropriate computational tools will be created. We shall demonstrate low-loss, compact interconnects and passive components based on photonic bandgap effects. Current-injection regions will be incorporated and an ultra-compact tunable filter will be demonstrated, with a long term view of incorporting active elements for a variety of functions such as gain, switching and modulation. Work will be greatly enhanced by a strong technical collaboration with some of the UiVs leading manufacturers of equipment and components for fibre optical systems applications.
