|
A measurement system will be constructed appropriate for investigating the physics of single-molecule devices incorporating carbon nanotubes. Molecular nanostructures represent in many ways the convergence of diverse scientific disciplines, and are currently attracted extraordinary attention internationally, although their profile in the UK is as yet surprisingly small. We already have devices suitable for investigation, and further devices are being or will be fabricated in collaboration with the Neils Bohr Nanolab, Copenhagen. A range of experimental techniques will be employed, beginning with dc electrical transport. The initial aim will be to perform detailed low-temperature investigations of nanotubes with simple metal contacts. Phenomena that may be observable include the Kondo effect, spin-charge separation, and the Mott transition in one dimension. Later measurements, requiring an expansion of facilities, will be made of quantum noise, high frequency responses, and electromechanical properties of molecular nanostructures, more sophisticated device structures will be developed, and other molecules such as DNA and silicon nanowire will be investigated in a similar way.
