Summary on Grant Application Form |
The principle aim of this project is to research into a condition monitoring technique for Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) that will improve the reliability and prolong life of such equipment; this would be achieved through giving an early warning of any weak spots and potential defects which if not identified at their infancy stage, could lead to a total (and therefore very expensive) failure of the switchgear. The fundamental basis of the work will be to research into Wavelent Transform (combined with Artificial intelligence technology) based technique capable of satisfactorily dealing with partial discharge phenomena associated with GIS defects and weak spots. This is a joint effort between the researchers at the University of Bath and Sungkyun Kwan University, Korea, under the EPSRC's Engineering International Collaboration programme, and under the banner 'Aide Memoire Between Korea Science Engineering Foundation (KOSEF) and EPSRC'As an adjunct to the foregoing, it is also the intention to augment the academic link between the two institutions through collaborative research and exchange of postgraduate students/academics.
