Summary on Grant Application Form
Atomistic simulations of the way in which surfaces in contact deform will be carried out. The deformation includes both the process of indentation and also sliding friction. The computer code will be written in parallel and implemented on a Beowulf cluster so that mesoscopic simulations can be carried out on systems of hundreds of thousands of atoms for nanosecond or greater time scales. This will make these simulations much more realistic than was previously possible. The results of these simulations will be compared to experimental work being carried out in Berlin and Australia.
