Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project is concerned with an international collaboration between the Dynamics Research Group (DRG) of the University of Sheffield and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Structured Dynamics and Vibration Control of the Catholic University of America (ICSD), Washington DC. The ICSD will develop novel spectral finite elements (SFE) related to smart sandwich structures with novel core, visoelastic and active materials. Spectral elements are formulated directly in the frequency domain, needing a reduced number of elements to describe the dynamics of structural components. The SFE technique will therefore allow to model accurately and with computational efficiency high frequency dynamics problems and active control technologies of smart structures (beams and plates) in civil, mechanical and aerospace applications. The smart sandwich SFE formulations will embed the mechanical and visoelastic properties of novel core materials (polymer gradient and cellular auxetic) recently investigated in the Dynamics Research Group. The results from the numerical simulations carried out from the Spectral Element models will be compared with the ones from classical Finite Element models developed by the DRG and from experimental tests on existing samples with strain gauges techniques. Once validated, the SFE developed will from the basis of a toolbox in MATLAB designed by the ICSD for the simulation needs of the two groups.
