Following a literature review, this project will identify quantitatively and qualitatively from tests with visually impaired participants the areas of inaccessibility within inter-modal transport environments. Rail, bus and airport inter-modal transfer points are the specific areas examined in this study. The work of the LINK CMR, Project 249, Project Rainbow concerning luminance contrast in search and navigation tasks for visually impaired people (VIP's) will be carried forward into these new environments. The widespread use of monochromatic colour schemes and highly reflective surfaces, e.g., glass and metal are known to cause problems for VIP's and this study will address for the first time the impact of the use of these materials and finishes. A comprehensive colour and lighting survey of inter-modal transport environments will be made. Computer software will be used to capture the luminance contrast of a range of inter-modal transport environments. The software will be developed during the project to enable identification of critical areas of poor luminance contrast. The output of this work will be design guidance, published articles, conference and refereed papers in academic journals. A web site will be established and data will be collected and verified to allow for the development of software as an appraisal tool for luminance contrast.
